The Role of our School Council

Our School Council gives us, the pupils, a chance to give our opinion on issues at our school. Over the years we have carried out a number of activities that have helped to make improvements at Ashfield, we have raised money for Ashfield and other charities, we have brought up environmental issues to raise awareness and we have been able to make decisions representing the rest of the pupils. Here is a brief summary of some of the things we have achieved:
  • raised money for charties
  • help raise money for the school
  • thought of questions for interviewing new staff and taken part interviewing new teachers
  • we have oranised playground leaders
  • fair trade stalls
  • we speak for the other children in the school and make decisions
  • review school policies
  • designed an anti-racist poster
  • listened to promblems that the children may have and spoken to adults in school who can help
  • suggest school improvments
  • decide where to go on school trips
This year our aim is to raise some more money for the school fund as alot of children would like more Trim Trail equipment. We plan to do this by having a stall at the christmas and summer fairs and also by holding lots of competitions through the year.

If you can think of anything that you would like School Council to do, don't forget to tell your class council rep and they will bring it up at the next meeting.

Playground Leaders

School council expressed an interest in starting up playground leaders for lunch and breaktimes. Miss Bavin has been running the club at Golden Time. The volunteers have been learning playground games, wake-up shake-up routines and will be doing conflict resolution to support children in solving friendship problems.

Think Tank 1

What if door handles were made of chocolate?

Try to think of 1 positive answer, 1 negative answer and 1 interesting answer.

E.g.
Positive - you could have a nibble if you were hungry.
Negative - the chocolate would melt and you may get locked in.
Interesting - which chocolate would make the best door handle - milk, dark or white?

Think Tank

School council will be posting 'What If' style questions onto their blog and their notice board in school. These questions are designed to promote creative thinking. You may post your answers on the blog or the notice board. It's time to get thinking!

School Council Minutes 1/3/11

Present: Milly, Abi, Ritesh, Will, Chloe, Jack, Jamie, Anne, Adam, Chloe, Shane and Mrs Wales

Absent: Molly

1)                School Council agreed to move the Name the Teddy fund raiser to the Summer Term so we could concentrate on Red Nose Day.

2)               We finalised the Anti Racism Charter and Mrs Wales is going to photocopy 1 per class to be displayed in each classroom and to be agreed and signed by all the children.

3)               We came up with some fund raising ideas for Red Nose Day (Do something funny for money):
·        Fancy Dress – bring a donation and wear fancy dress (the funnier the better). Prizes for best girl and boy in each class to be decided by class teachers and presented in the afternoon at the Comedy Show.
·        Bun / biscuit sale – class teachers to bring in biscuits/buns for their own class and sell just before break.
·        Comedy Show – Friday pm - similar style to the talent show where auditions are held in class and 2 or 3 acts are chosen to represent each class in the Comedy Show. Ideas for acts – telling jokes, impressions, clown act, magic, juggling…

Red Nose Day Friday 18th March

The School Council have agreed that we should support Red Nose Day at Ashfield. As the theme is 'Do something funny for money' we are going to hold a fancy dress competition, the funnier the outfit the better, and the children can bring in a contribution towards Comic Relief. We also decided that each class would hold a Bun Sale and we would end the day with a Comedy Show. So please remember on Friday 18th March to bring your comedy acts and cash for Comic Relief!
